Triangle area formula
The area of a triangle is calculated by multiplying the base by the height and dividing by 2:
A = (b × h) ÷ 2
Where b is the base and h is the perpendicular height to the base. The result is in square units: cm², m², etc.
Practical examples
| Base (b) | Height (h) | Area (A = b × h ÷ 2) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m | 6 m | 30 m² |
| 8 cm | 5 cm | 20 cm² |
| 7.5 m | 4 m | 15 m² |
| 12 mm | 9 mm | 54 mm² |
| 3 km | 2 km | 3 km² |
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for the area of a triangle?
The area of a triangle is A = (b × h) ÷ 2, where b is the base and h is the height. For example, base 10 m and height 6 m: A = (10 × 6) ÷ 2 = 30 m².
Why is the triangle area divided by 2?
Because every triangle is half of a parallelogram with the same base and height. The area of the parallelogram is b × h, so the triangle area is (b × h) / 2.
Does the formula work for any type of triangle?
Yes. The formula is valid for equilateral, isosceles, scalene, acute, right and obtuse triangles — as long as h is the perpendicular height to the chosen base.
What is the difference between triangle area and perimeter?
The area (A = b × h / 2) measures the internal space in square units. The perimeter is the sum of the three sides and is measured in linear units.
Can I use a comma instead of a decimal point?
Yes. This calculator accepts both a comma and a period as the decimal separator.
