How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the number you want to round (you can use a comma as a thousands separator).
  2. The three results (thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand) are shown automatically.
  3. To select a different rounding mode, check Show advanced rounding modes.

How to round to the nearest thousand

To round a number to the nearest thousand:

  1. Identify the hundreds digit (third position to the left of the decimal point).
  2. If that digit is 5 or greater, round up (add 1 to the thousands digit and set the rest to zero).
  3. If it is less than 5, keep the thousands digit and set the remaining digits to zero.

Example: 123,334

  • Thousand: hundreds digit = 3 < 5 → 123,000
  • Ten thousand: thousands digit = 3 < 5 → 120,000
  • Hundred thousand: ten-thousands digit = 2 < 5 → 100,000

Frequently asked questions

How to round to the nearest thousand?

Look at the hundreds digit: if it is 5 or more, add 1 to the thousands digit and set all lower digits to zero; if less than 5, keep and set to zero. Example: 3,734 → 4,000; 3,412 → 3,000.

What is the difference between thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand?

A thousand (1,000) is the fourth digit position, a ten thousand (10,000) is the fifth and a hundred thousand (100,000) is the sixth. When rounding to each, all digits to the right of the chosen position become zero.

How to round up to the nearest thousand?

In Up mode the number is always rounded to the next thousand, even if the hundreds digit is 1. So 3,001 → 4,000. This mode is useful for conservative cost or material estimates.

What is banker's rounding?

Half even (banker's rounding) rounds 0.5 to the nearest even digit. So 2,500 → 2,000 and 3,500 → 4,000. This method reduces accumulated rounding bias across many financial operations.
